Stop puppy from chewing things

PDF Print E-mail

Chewing problem with puppies is always difficult, and it's to be resolve for your pet to be a part of your household. The good news is that, as they get older, most dogs grow out of their chewing behavior. The bad news is that, before they stop this behavior, they can make a lot of damage. There are some ways to teach your puppy to direct his very normal chewing energy at the right kind of objects, but like any other training, patience and persistence are unavoidable.

To stop your puppy from chewing on your furniture, wallet, remote control, and everything else in sight, firstly you should never give him the opportunity. This means you may need to lock him up when you're not with him either in a crate, kennel, run, or puppy-safe room. Crate-training is the most possible option for many people. When you're away, it can keep your puppy feeling safe and secure.

Whatever space you chose, put in some safe and appropriate chew toys and lots of comfortable bedding. As your pup spends a long period of time chewing on these toys, he'll begin to distinguish between his objects and those which are not. You should watch him like a hawk when you are around. When you see him grabbing onto your leather loafers or a chair leg, divert him with more attractive option.

Give him lots of praise and petting when he takes the rawhide chew or nylon bone or whatever considered “good toy” you want him to chew. This is not to punish your dog for the "bad" chewing, but to encourage him to switch to the good behavior. You may give him lots of "good boys" and other positive attention whenever you see him chewing away on one of his toys. Before long, he'll understand that the toys are what you want him to use. You may have to switch his toys around to make sure he is not getting bored. They might be a rubber ball doing the trick one day, while the next day it is only a sock tied up in a knot.

Moreover, some household materials can be very good chew toys, but you need to make sure that those materials can't be chewed into bits and swallowed. The hollow rubber balls sold at pet stores can be an excellent option to get almost any dog's attention. You can fill them with food or your dog's preferred treat, and he will spend time gnawing at it, trying hard to get the goodies out. As well, if he tends to chew on a surface that is color safe and won't be damaged which is like your fingers, the surface cab is coated in white vinegar or even rubbing alcohol. The smell and taste will make it less attractive. Finally, the most important aspect is the owner must never give up on his puppy. It is not as easy as thought to retrain a natural behavior like chewing, but it's worth it to have a happy, well-adjusted dog. If your dog seems to refuse to go along with all efforts to retrain him, you may consult your veterinarian. And then, you will be referred to a behavior specialist or even discussed about anti-anxiety medication.
